  • 741.It is very common for a classroom to have a world map on the wall. However,a new map, called the AuthaGraph World Map,might replace the old maps. (1)
This surprised many because earlier winners of the important award have been things like robots and mobility chairs (移动座椅).
But this map is very special, because it is more accurate than the maps you have used at school. This is because it is difficult to copy the 3-D,spherical surface (球面) of the world onto a 2-D map.(2)
This means places like North America look much bigger than they really are.North America looks the same size as Africa, even though Africa is much bigger. (3)

Many people have tried to fix this problem, but until now they haven't been successful.
       (4)
Created by Japanese designer Hajime Narukawa,it cuts the globe into 96 equal triangles and puts them into a tetrahedron (四面体) shape. In this way,the designer keeps the proportions (比例) of the land and water the same when going from a 3-D sphere to a 2-D map.
The map is already being used in Japanese school textbooks.According to the Good Design Award judges,it is the best example of what the planet really looks like. (5)

A.However, they did suggest increasing the accuracy further by cutting the world into even smaller pieces.
B.It recently won Japan's 2016 Good Design Award.
C.Similarly,Alaska looks bigger than Brazil, even though Brazil is more than five times bigger in real life.
D.It recently becomes very popular in Japan and catch much attention.
E.That means the body of the world has been changed.
F.Bodies of water and land are distorted (变形) because of this.
G.The AuthaGraph World Map appears to have solved the problem using geometry.

  • 742.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A boy named Ali had a large and harmonious family, happily living with his sisters, parents and grandmother. His grandmother loved everyone a lot and was respected by all family members. She was very old,yet sometimes she would recall things from her past and share with them.Sometimes they would believe her but at other times they would think that Granny might be mixing up the facts due to her old age.
One day, when Ali was in school, suddenly while knitting(编织),Granny remembered something and she couldn't contain her emotions so she got up to tell her son-Ali's father. She walked as fast as she could to his room and said,"You always asked about my birth date but do you know today is the day when I was born."
She looked at her son with an excited expression, expecting an immediate response. However, her son wondered how she could remember her date of birth in this old age when she forgot so many other things,so he didn't pay much attention to this.Disappointed at her son's reaction,Granny then went to Ali's mother and Ali's sister, but like Ali's father, nobody believed her.
Disheartened, she went and sat in the yard. When Ali returned from his school,he found his grandmother sitting alone with a sad expression.Ali asked his granny about the matter, but she said there was nothing to worry about. After a lot of persuasion she revealed what was troubling her-nobody seemed to care that it was her birthday today!
After hearing what Granny said,Ali thought of a plan.Purely by chance, some of Ali's friends were playing nearby so he shared his plan with them.

What has swimming taught me?I've learned that balance is the key to being a good swimmer. If you are balanced in the water, you have no resistance.Working on staying balanced made me realize the similarities between life in and out of the swim lane(泳道).If you work on keeping yourself balanced, you will be able to swim right through the stress and problems life throws at you!

  • 747.It's uncertain when many offices may reopen, but it's clear the virtual work revolution that began with the pandemic isn't going away.
Alexia Cambon, research director at Gartner, says finding the right combination of in-person and virtual work will take creativity and experimentation.Managing director Deborah Lovich stresses that companies should consider that flexibility is not only about location, but also about the hours employees work.
Alexia also points out the importance of finding solutions for a whole team. "What COVID-19 taught us is that flex work cannot be for an individual. It has to be for the team," she says. "When the whole team is together online versus a whole team together in person,it works."
Progressive organizations are also reconsidering their workplace culture. "They're thinking about changing culture and leadership to be much more trust-based,impact-based,instead of input-based,like,I see you,so I think you're productive,' compared to, 'Wow,I see what you've accomplished, and I know you've been productive,""Lovich says.
Lovich sees remote work as a "win-win" for employees who get more flexibility and employers who can hire people from anywhere in the country or even the world. She views it as creating equality in terms of allowing small towns to attract talent and offering more opportunity for women to climb the corporate ladder without having to relocate their families, something that she says often takes a back seat in a dual-career houschold.
Companies that require a return to a fully on-site model could lose one in three employees.Lovich agrees that employers need to be careful. "It's an employee's market right now.The world is short of workers, and because of that we should really think about what we need and feel confident and courageous to speak up.And a lot of companies are getting that, and so it's a real opportunity to either shape the place you work to be the place it needs to be or go someplace else that does,"Lovich says."For decades,we've been contorting(扭曲)our lives to fit around work, and COVID-19 forced work to fit around lives."

(1)What does Alexia emphasize according to the text?

A.How to make virtual work go away soon.
B.How to create virtual work cooperatively.
C.How to combine virtual work with science.
D.How to find the best location for virtual work
(2)Why do progressive organizations change their workplace culture?

A.To take control of the development of virtual work.
B.To compare company culture with firm leadership.
C.To make employees feel trusted and develop positively.
D.To persuade more companies to choose virtual work soon.
(3)What does Lovich think of virtual work?

A.It is attractive to all employees.
B.It is just beneficial to employers.
C.It is popular among small firms.
D.It benefits both bosses and workers.
(4)What does the author mainly want to tell us?

A.Virtual work is here to stay.
    B.Advantages of virtual work.
    C.Be far away from flexibility.
    D.A"win-win" change for business.

  • 748.If you're looking to buy a gift for your children, why not keep up with the trend and get the best hoverboard?
       What is a Hoverboard?
A hoverboard is a two-wheeled personal transportation device. It's electrical, portable and became highly popular in 2015 in reference to a popular 1980's movie.Typically, this self-balancing device operates like a powered skateboard.
       How Does a Hoverboard Work?
The device may have many designs, but the mechanism itself isn't complicated.Basically,a standard hoverboard contains:
       •Battery:stores the electrical power.Almost all hoverboards use a high-watt lithium-ion battery.
•Gyroscope (one for each wheel):allows riders to tilt (倾斜) the hoverboard while maintaining balance and adjusting their direction.
•Motor (one in each wheel):provides the power to the wheels to keep the rider balanced and upright.
•Logic board:functions as the hoverboard brain. It processes data - your speed, tilt, etc. - and sends information to the motors. This unit controls the power of the board so riders can adjust their speed.
All the above components work together to control the power and tilt of the hoverboards so the rider is balanced, upright and moving at a controlled speed.
       Why Buy a Hoverboard?
Undoubtedly, hoverboards are cool. You've probably seen kids riding one around the house. They're a phenomenon and everybody wants in.So,why deny your kids and prevent them from being part of this trend?
       Where is a hoverboard legal?
Despite their wild popularity, hoverboards have yet to become "street-legal".Currently,some places prohibit anyone under 16 from using these devices, and hoverboards are banned in academic institutions and public places, like campus buildings, parks, shopping malls and subway stations. Some places have also put speed limits on the devices and restricted their use to bike paths. However, open areas - including your yard - are free of these restrictions.
