What comes to your mind when you think of Beijing? The Forbidden City?Tian'anmen Square? The Temple of Heaven?
These famous places are all located along the central axis(中轴线).It may become a UNESCO World Heritage site( 联合国教科文组织世界遗产) .
The central axis is like the "line" that separates the eastern and western parts of Beijing. At 7.8 kilometers long,it runs from Yongding Gate in the south to the Bell Tower and Drum Tower in the north,Its building started in the Yuan Dynasty (1271一1368),and continued during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.Today, modem buildings lie along the extended (延展的) line of the axis. They include the National Stadium (国家体自场) in the north, and Beijing Daxing International Airport in the south.
The central axis shows important ideas in traditional Chinese culture. The center of places was considered to be very important in ancient times. When building cities, they put royal palaces (皇家宫殿) in the center of cities. The Forbidden City is a great example. It shows that royal power was important.Other important buildings were built around the center. It was to achieve balance, order and symmetry (对称) .
Beijing was not the first city to use the central axis design.During the Three Kingdoms period (220-280),the city of Yecheng had a street from the east to the west.It separated the royal palaces from common people's living and business areas. In Chang an,the capital of the Tang Dynasty (618-907),there was a wide street from the north to the south. It worked as the central axis.Today's Luoyang, once a capital city, also has a central axis.

  • 3."Colour" and "color", "favourite" and "favorite", "honour" and "honor"...Have you ever wondered why Americans spell those words without a "u"?Is it because they are lazy?
